Annabel Daou
Annabel Daou is a biting provocateur, though you possibly wouldn't notice it right away. Her work is layered with language, not hidden, but not loud in the way one might consider "message art". Inscriptions crawl like ants along thin strips of document repair tape or as in more recent works, are cut into with an Xacto blade. Throughout, declarative statements are camouflaged along her surface as indications of Daou's desire to communicate with language as a symbol.
Daou was born and raised in Beirut and lives in New York. Her work has been shown at The National Museum of Beirut; The Park Avenue Armory, New York; KW, Berlin; The Drawing Room, London; and The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. Public collections include Baltimore Museum of Art; The Menil Collection, Houston; The Brooklyn Museum of Art; The Vehbi Koç Foundation, Istanbul; the Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita; and The Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven. In 2019-20, Daou was a Pollock-Krasner resident at ISCP. In the summer of 2023, Daou will be an artist in residence at the Haus Des Papiers in Berlin, Germany.
