HARD 2 DEATH: Second Childhood
Dr. Fahamu Pecou
In his third exhibition at Conduit Gallery, Atlanta-based artist Fahamu Pecou will show work created during a recent residency at the McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte, N.C. Second Childhood is the second in a series of four suites of paintings collectively titled HARD 2 DEATH. Each suite explores specific concerns concerning contemporary black male culture. Specifically, the Second Childhood paintings show Pecou himself dressed in childrens’ clothing and posturing in what Pecou refers to as “child-like tropes”. Pecou’s paintings examine what he sees as an attraction to or longings for “a misplaced or never fully realized childhood.”
Since 2009, Fahamu Pecou’s work has been featured in three international solo exhibitions: Bell Roberts Gallery, Cape Town, South Africa; Volta 5, Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland and Back Slash Gallery in Paris, France. In 2010, Pecou was named the first-ever Artist-In-Residence at the Harvey B. Gantt Center of African American Art and Culture in Charlotte, NC. His work has been reviewed and featured in numerous publications including Art In America, Harper’s Magazine, NY Arts Magazine, Mass Appeal Magazine, The Fader Magazine, NY Arts Magazine, Artlies Magazine (cover) and “DEFINITION: The Art and Design of Hip Hop”, an anthology chronicling the impact of hip-hop on visual culture, written by famed graffiti artist and designer Cey Adams.
