House Plants

Michael Mazurek

"All art is made out of anger." -Lawrence Weiner, Nov. 29, 2012, Nasher Sculpture Center

House Plant is a direct attack on decoration and impressiveness. It is a thing admitting what it is, but at the same time mocking its position as such. The photo is a stand-in, partaking in the land of the decorative so to admonish it. It says, If art is to function simply as ornamentation, then it is no more than a household accessory, or worse yet, the house plant observes more attention and care than aforementioned.

Michael Mazurek earned and MFA in Intermedia Studies from the University of Texas Arlington in 2011 and a BFA in Art History and Studio Art from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas in 1997. Along with numerous curatorial projects; in 2012, Mazurek, along with collaborators Jesse Morgan Barnett and C.J. Davis presented the Dallas Biennial, an online exhibition of international artists that will see its second incarnation Spring 2014 at various locations throughout Dallas. The same artistic collaboration, under the moniker Dick Higgins Gallery, was exhibited at the Dallas Museum of Art in the summer of 2013 as a part of the Dallas Sites exhibition. Michael Mazurek is represented by Oliver Francis Gallery.
