Humid Futures

Jules Buck Jones

Conduit Gallery is pleased to announce Humid Futures, a solo exhibition of work by Austin-based artist, Jules Buck Jones.

Jules Buck Jones is inspired by the mechanics and mysteries of the natural world. His body of work ranges from dense, organic watercolors and drawings, to large-scale performances employing costumes and puppetry. The paintings and drawings in the new series featured in Humid Futures explores the overlapping ranges of biological and mythological terminology and imagery. Throughout the work, the viewer finds a world where subjects and scenes transform through recognizable and bizarre means. The work is aggressive and dense, electric and sharp.

Through the layering of transparent media and the use of various drawing tools and languages, the work captures the grand and minute rhythms of the natural world. Much of the work attempts to strike a tension by perching itself on the edge of different spaces or times. The Cenote paintings position themselves on the doorstep of the underworld, while Humid Future depicts the past, present, and future through raising and receding water levels. The Genesis series of drawings portray an abridged history of life, while paintings like Circadia depict the chaos and order of earthly cycles. The work weaves in and out of the geological time scale pairing the natural with the supernatural and revealing the magic of the day to day.

Jules Buck Jones earned a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA in 2005 and an MFA in Painting at the University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX in 2008. Jones is a founding member of the collective non-profit, MASS Gallery, and the art / science collective Animal Facts Club, both located in Austin TX. He has been invited to art residencies in Maine, New York, Tennessee, Vermont, the Florida Everglades and Barcelona. Jones currently teaches painting and drawing at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. He recently received the Makers Muse Award from New Mexico’s Kindle Project and just completed a large commission for the new Line Hotel in downtown Austin.
