Playing the Angles

Ted Larsen

In this group of work, Larsen tasked himself to create a body of work without any kind of shape redundancy. His sculptural works, both two-dimensional and three dimensional are constructed from salvaged steel. Larsen uses these cast-off materials to explore formal issues and construction by creating aesthetic situations. The parameters on non-redundant shapes used in creating this body of work also guides the viewers experience of the work in the exhibition. While viewing the work, one is able to draw connections and consider relationships between the pieces themselves and each sculpture’s economy or elaborateness and the circumstances of the society which created the waste the works are made from.

A native of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Ted Larsen has shown nationally since earning a B.F.A. from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ in 1986. Awards since 2008 include: the Surdna Foundation Educational Travel Grant, New York, NY; the 2011 Asilah Arts Festival, Asilah, Morocco, Edward F.
