Untitled Works

Kendall Glover

Untitled Works is the first exhibition in Texas for Brooklyn based, Kendall Glover. Working in a variety of media, Glover considers her works to be drawings as they are primarily focused on line, the redirection of line leading to the formation of planes and volumes (when three dimensions are in play), secondarily on contrast, in terms of positive verses negative space and the tension held between. The materials used are inherently delicate so the process of working with them is one of cooperation, which leans heavily on the artist’s textile dexterity. In studying modern and historical artifacts, Glover is interested in extracting and distorting gestures or forms that she finds intrinsically powerful, aiming to recreate that quality in her own abstract imagery.

In addition to the formal elements previously mentioned, Glover has been interested in a transformation of the medium into the image. In the works on paper this is approached by removing the dye from the paper so the image becomes imbedded within the paper plane, making mark and substrate indistinguishable. In the drawings made with reed, the substrate is eliminated completely and only air is left to maintain volumes and planes. This desire to unite line and substrate within the same plane began with a small series in which sewing thread was sewn into the weave structure of industrially woven cloth. Glover quickly realized that weaving the cloth by hand, using inlay to place the horizontal lines of the image would allow greater freedom and be more efficient.

Born in 1987 in Richmond, Virginia, Kendall Glover earned a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia 2009 where she was honored with an Outstanding Achievement Award. From March through April 2016, Glover was an artist in residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, CT and in 2015, Glover was awarded a residency grant from the Vermont Studio Center. Exhibitions since 2008 include: Satellite Contemporary, Flagstaff AZ (2015); New Age Drinks, Jerome AZ (2015); St. Cecilia’s Convent, Brooklyn, NY (2011); Jepson Center for the Arts, Savannah, GA (2009) and Lacoste, France (2008.)
