Annabel Daou at the Beirut Museum of Art
May 24, 2018
About CHOU HAYDA: In November of 2017, people from across Beirut came to the National Museum and gave their voices to a number of objects in the collection. The people spoke to and for and about these objects from the past, and, in doing so, they revealed fragments of the present. They did not attempt to disclose a particular historical narrative. Nor did they attempt to create a fiction. They did not lie and they did not try to tell the truth.

Melting Point: Movements in Contemporary Clay, is the CAFAM‘s first clay biennial and focuses on artistic practices that are currently expanding the conceptual, aesthetic, and sociopolitical potential of the ceramic object. Melting Point presents works from both emerging and established artists that push traditional processes of working with clay and question pre-conceived definitions of the ceramic object. These artists choose to work with clay for its technical, conceptual, and metaphoric possibilities and capitalize on clay’s versatility along with the countless glazes and firing techniques available—often viewing the clay, glaze, or kiln as a collaborator in their process. Works in the exhibition include sculptural objects, site-specific installations, and performative works. Curated by Holly Jerger, CAFAM exhibitions curator, and Andres Payan, CAFAM curator of public engagement. Melting Point will be on view, January 28 through May 16, 2018.

TRACE: The Works of Billy Hassell will be on view at the Michelson Museum of Art from January 25 to April 14, 2018. Using vibrant colors, Mr. Hassell captures viewers' eyes with his images of lively fauna and bold flora and minds by drawing attention to Nature. The title of the show, Trace, is meant to suggest both a path and a mark made, a line drawn and also evidence of what is left behind. Many of his paintings and lithographs invite discussions about beauty as well as environmental and conservation issues.
