I have only what I remember

Ted Larsen

Conduit Gallery is honored to announce a solo exhibition of work by Santa Fe-based artist, Ted Larsen. The exhibition will be sixth solo exhibition at Conduit Gallery for the artist.

Ted Larsen’s studio practice eschews a single theme or didactic agenda. Throughout his sculptural practice, the works keep possession of a formality and elegance, while at the same time poking fun of modernist purity. Larsen creates abstract sculptures from salvaged materials, or ‘non-art materials’, as he calls them, re-purposing ‘detritus’ in order to ‘re-contextualize’ its meaning.

There are two distinct compositions utilized in the exhibition: Window Boxes and Camshafts. Each functions differently, but both are intended to illuminate consciousness within us. The Window Boxes are essentially mirrors and allow for a place of reflection while the Camshafts are actuators of space and our relationship to it.

Notes Larsen about the work, “Memory is elusive and time is fluid. Together they make our world somewhat unknowable. The work for this exhibition commenced at the beginning of the pandemic. There is an essential openness or blankness to this body of work which is intended to prompt the viewer towards introspection, to question what is seen and experienced as a metaphor for the larger world we inhabit.”

A native of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Ted Larsen has shown internationally since earning a B.F.A. from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ in 1986. Selected solo exhibitions since 2014 include: Galerie Dutko, Paris, France (2020); FOLD Gallery, London, UK (2019); Joshua Liner Gallery, New York, NY (2019); VOLTA Basel with Pentimenti Gallery (2019); Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (2017); Jack Fischer Gallery, San Francisco, California (2017); The Old Jail Art Center (Cell Series), Albany, TX (2016); Margaret Thatcher Projects, New York, New York (2016); Robischon Gallery, Denver, Colorado (2015); Schmidt Dean Gallery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2014); Lesley Heller Workspace, New York, New York (2014).
