Systems. Structures. Societies.

David Canright

Conduit Gallery is honored to present a new body of work by Dallas-based artist, David Canright. The twelve drawings conclude a multi-year exploration of artificial environments, simulated experiences, and fantastically massive buildings.

In each drawing, Canright sets out to create a self-contained world fully equipped to satisfy the needs and wants of guests and resident staff, systems he considers plausible enough to actually function. The drawings are dense with small stories and surprising moments, while leaving space for invention, imagination, and personal interpretation. Canright hopes viewers enter through the front door, wind through the corridors, and find something new on every visit. He confines himself to the language of black and white schematics, a form he sees as best suited to convey meticulous planning and plausible engineering. The intent, in his words, is for the work to be amusing, satirical, and absurd, but in a convincing way.

David Canright is an artist and writer from Cleveland, Ohio. He studied art at the University of Texas at Austin with Peter Saul and Richard Thompson. After college he spent ten years in New York, where he exhibited work at several venues including Clementine Gallery, The Drawing Center, and the Yale University Gallery. He is currently making drawings and paintings in Dallas, and his work has been featured most recently at Conduit Gallery and the Dallas Art Fair.
