Conduit Gallery is honored to announce Variant, the second solo exhibition at Conduit Gallery of sculpture and collage by London based artist Kendall Glover.
Kendall Glover (b.1987, Richmond, Virginia) works between two dimensional works on paper and three dimensional sculptures. In 2016, she exhibited a series of rattan and raffia relief sculptures in the Conduit Gallery Project Room primarily focused on line and the consequential formation of implied planes and volumes. Those sculptures became the basis for an ambitious series of collages made from various handmade papers (Japanese Yatsuo, Gampi, Mitsumata, and Korean Hanji) which will be on view. In the collages, informed by the rattan sculptures, line becomes a result of planar relationships, while color is used to unite, repel, agitate, and explore the various ways parts can be combined to form a whole.
The imagery brings to mind modernist formalism, art deco architecture and the human form and within each of these, the ubiquitous form of the arch; appealing to Glover for its ability to at once reference a figure and an architectural structure. Each of the collages exists in variants. In the lineage of Josef Albers, Glover utilizes changes in color relationships and linear elements to maintain the desired tension in her compositions.
Notes Glover, “I’m fascinated by the power of historical objects, icons, and architecture; a power, through a synthesis of formal elements, to overwhelm or arouse even when removed from context. These circumstances are a constant consideration in my current practice, having compiled a lexicon of forms I use as variables to make subtle deviations in my own abstract imagery. An interest in the relationships between those forms/figures, led to a desire for the viewer to interact on the same plane, resulting in my shift towards sculpture”.
Kendall Glover earned a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia 2009 where she was honored with an Outstanding Achievement Award and is currently an MFA candidate at Goldsmiths College in London. From March through April 2016, Glover was an artist in residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, CT and in 2015, Glover was awarded a residency grant from the Vermont Studio Center. Recent exhibitions include: Kiosk, Marseille, France (2019); DAAB, Brooklyn, NY (2018); Conduit Gallery Project Room, Dallas, TX (2016); Satellite Contemporary, Flagstaff AZ (2015); New Age Drinks, Jerome AZ (2015); St. Cecilia’s Convent, Brooklyn, NY (2011); Jepson Center for the Arts, Savannah, GA (2009) and Lacoste, France (2008.)
