East of the Sun, West of the Moon

Steven J. Miller

Denton based artist Steven J. Miller's paintings are precisely rendered fantastical architectural landscapes that blur the boundaries between imagination, storytelling, and speculative futures.

Borrowing its title from a 19th-century Norwegian fairy tale, East of the Sun, West of the Moon positions Miller’s paintings as entries into a mythic realm. Drawing on the spirit of folklore and fantasy, the artist constructs elaborate environments where nature and technology intertwine—idealized, uninhabited spaces that feel both ancient and futuristic. Miller’s imagined worlds are paradoxically serene and unsettling. In each piece, intricate architectural and sculptural forms suggest a once-human presence, yet no living figures remain. These are landscapes of stark contrasts: lush flora grows beside gleaming machinery; precise geometry interrupts organic terrain. The visual harmony of these scenes is amplified—and made uncanny—by Miller’s use of flat, unmodulated paint, which compresses depth and suspends time. While the compositions evoke utopian promise, the eerie stillness and sterile perfection hint at something more ambiguous. Are these post-human ruins or aspirational blueprints for what might come? Miller leaves the question open, inviting viewers to linger in a space where the magical meets the mechanical.
