Conduit Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of work by Rosalyn Bodycomb: Trance.
Rosalyn Bodycomb’s third solo exhibition at Conduit Gallery, Trance, presents the first exhibition in Texas of two monumental paintings sponsored by a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Grant. Through the grant Bodycomb was able to extensively document the Marion River in New York’s Adirondack Mountains and paint a large scale triptych depicting the surface of the water and reflected These paintings of reflected light or shadow contain at once a moment in time and a whole world.
The works appear painterly and abstract, graceful and swirling in the eddies of imagination. They play off the tension between surface and medium; a metaphor that gives evidence to the existence of layered reality.
For her Insomniac series, Bodycomb has painted the shadows on her ceiling. Created by a play of light from surrounding windows in what seems to be a mirror effect, these shadows only appear at certain hours of the night. The nocturnal works echo the Trance paintings in that they reflect the mystery visible to those who have eyes to see. Bodycomb is entranced by what she sees: shadows on the ceiling and reflections of the sky. In each of these works, the artist and viewer are in the space in between.
Rosalyn Bodycomb is the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Award (2005), a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (2007), and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2009.) She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and spent her childhood in Southern California. She earned an M.F.A. from Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas and has exhibited nationally including; the L9 Center for the Arts, New Orleans, LA (2013); The Durst Organization, New York, NY (2012); Chashama Foundation, Brooklyn Army Terminal, NY (2011); Salomon Arts Gallery, New York, NY (2011) and Nohra Haime Gallery, New York, NY (2010). Bodycomb lives and works in New York, NY.
